Many did not choose to flee\, but were forced because of war\, violence or persecution\, often without warning or the ability to return. \nThe six participating artists—Pam Cooper\, Anne Dushanko Dobek\, Mansa Mussa\, Ibou Ibrahim Ndoye\, Danielle Scott\, and Agnieszka Wszolkowaka—weave a complex tapestry of the immigration experience. Come hear them speak to their works and experiences. \nLearn more about the exhibit here. \nArtist Talk\nSunday\, May 19 from 2-4 pm\nat TSTI

SUMMARY:Art Talk: The Dreyfus Affair
DESCRIPTION:Topic: The Dreyfus Affair\, Anti-Semitism\, and Art in Paris \nThis class will discuss the Dreyfus Affair in detail\, including what led up to virulent anti-Semitism in France during the latter part of the 19th Century and the role art and artist-activists played. In 1894 Alfred Dreyfus\, a Jewish captain in the French army\, was wrongly accused of passing military secrets to the Germans. He was convicted of high treason\, court-martialed\, and deported to solitary confinement on Devil’s Island. France was split into a fierce anti-Semitic\, pro-military right-wing camp and a republican\, liberal\, left-wing camp. Shockwaves were felt in the circle of Parisian artists as well. \nJanuary 3\, 2024 at 7pm (ZOOM)\nFacilitator: Janet Cohen Mandel \nCheck your email for registration link.

SUMMARY:The Gallery at TSTI: Art Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with the four artists currently on view in the exhibition L’dor V’dor: New Visions of Judaica Exhibit:\nGerard Amsellem\, Aliza Augustine\, Rachel Kanter and Leslie Nobler.\n\nEach is these artists is of international acclaim and resides in neighboring Jewish communities in New Jersey. Using a variety of processes and materials\, their collective artworks speak to tradition\, history\, and memory. They simultaneously invite our contemplation and self-awareness.\n\nThrough scale and reflection\, Gerard Amsellem’s Memory-Mezuzoth offers protection to all\, whether crossing the threshold into our homes or going outside into the world. The project also memorializes those who have passed from the artist’s life\, but embraces their memory as inspiration. \nIn Daughters of Holocaust Survivors\, the photography of Aliza Augustine confronts the darkest chapter of Judaism\, remembering and honoring the children of survivors while projecting a defiant but cautionary tone. \nRachel Kanter’s sculptures\, Community Wimple\, I Immersion: Loss\, and Ritual Clothing repurpose vintage ceremonial clothing such as tallit or kitchen aprons of past generations into new objects\, enriched by our customs and household traditions. \nLeslie Nobler’s collaged and gently stitched portraits highlight the unique role of women in our families.  These pictures transcend the seeming simplicity of their elements by the artist’s reverence for her chosen subjects. \nAll four artists link their art to their personal commitment to Judaism with a modern vision of our people’s history. From “generation to generation\,” Jewish artists will continue to reinterpret who we are\, what we value and how we shape the future.

SUMMARY:Art Talk: Florine Stettheimer
DESCRIPTION:Florine Stettheimer:Icon of Jazz Age New York \nOne of New York’s most unconventional painters\, Florine Stettheimer was a keen and opinionated observer of the people and rapidly changing world around her. Her famous salon\, attended by New York’s avant-garde during the 1920s through the early ’40s\, was legendary. She prophetically chose to portray subjects considered controversial even today\, such as race\, sexual orientation\, gender\, and religion. Come and hear about her unique life and see some of her most celebrated works. It is time to recognize Florine Stettheimer as one of the most significant artists of the 20 th century\, whose work remains as modern and relevant today as it was a century ago. \nWednesday\, March 1\, 2023\n7:00pm\nIn Person \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Art Talk: Toulouse-Lautrec\, Suzanne Valadon and the Parisian Demi-Monde\, Part II
DESCRIPTION:Toulouse-Lautrec\, Suzanne Valadon and the Parisian Demi-Monde\, Part II\nFacilitator: Janet Cohen Mandel \nIn part II we will learn about his most important muse Suzanne Valadon\, a circus acrobat and artists’ model\, who gleaned what she could about painting by watching and listening to the men who put her image on canvas. But Toulouse-Lautrec was her earliest artistic influence. Under his tutelage she began to paint and created powerful\, unconventional images\, principally of women. Although mostly unknown today\, she is regarded by scholars as an important chronicler of women’s experiences. Her paintings remain fresh and modern\, cementing her legacy as a significant figure in the history of art. \nThese talks will be a wonderful complement to the exhibition “Suzanne Valadon: Model\, Painter\, Rebel” at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia\, on view until January 9\, 2022. \nOn Zoom\nTo register\, click here.
