CELEBRATING JEWISH DISABILITY AWARENESS AND INCLUSION MONTH

Film Screening with Disability Rights Activist Judy Heumann

The moving documentary Crip Camp tells the story of Camp Jened, a sleepaway camp in the 1970s Catskills for teenagers with physical and mental disabilities.

At that time, these teens faced a future shaped by isolation, discrimination and institutionalization…until they arrived at Camp Jened, a ramshackle summer camp that became their freewheeling utopia. Bonds between the campers endured as many migrated west to Berkeley, California — a hotbed of activism where the former campers realized that disruption, civil disobedience, and political participation could change the future for millions like them.

We are honored to welcome Judy Heumann as our facilitator. Judy is an internationally recognized disability rights activist and plays a central role in the film, and the author of two books, Being Heumann and Rolling Warrior.
