Support Families of Detained Immigrants

The TSTI Social Justice Initiative is joining a coalition of interfaith volunteers to support families of detained immigrants, including in-person and donation options.

Some opportunities to help families of detained immigrants:

  1. Donate to support First Friends as the organization collects grocery store gift cards for families.
  2. Diapers are always needed, especially larger sizes.  One volunteer has created Amazon wish list, which is an easy way to donate diapers.

In-Person Support
Starting Saturday, December 6th, the TSTI Social Justice Initiative will join a coalition of interfaith volunteers to support families of detained immigrants at Delaney Hall in Newark on the first Saturday of each month. Arrive between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., when families start lining up to wait for long periods of time to see their loved ones. Ways of providing in-person support include:

  1. Showing love and having conversation, providing warm blankets & camp chairs.
  2. Setting up and distributing items at the on-site mutual aid tables, offering food, diapers, and more to the families.
  3. Providing information on pro bono attorneys and other resources to help.
  4. Morning prayers for our immigrant neighbors, friends, and loved ones around 8 a.m.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • This is a volunteer effort open to all ages and takes place regardless of the weather.
  • If you attend in person and are able: please bring Shop Rite gift cards, diapers (larger sizes), and/or hats & gloves for adults and children. Shop Rite is preferred, as loved ones have easier access to this supermarket.
  • Park on Doremus Ave in front of Delaney Hall, or in the Prison parking lot next to Delaney Hall.
