Colorful Abstraction: The Light Within
“I am interested in expressing basic human emotions . . . The people who weep before my pictures are having the same religious experience I had when I painted them.” — Mark Rothko
“After the disappearance of the ‘story line’ in the maze of the contemporary artistic experiences . . . It is impossible to know which threads will lead us through the maze and which are dead ends.” — Sister Wendy Beckett
Colorful Abstraction: The Light Within
April 6th – June 15th, 2025
To fall under the spell of a work of abstract art is magical. Initially, it may seem foreign to our sensibilities, but what an artist is asking us to do is to first rely on our imagination and our instincts, to go beyond words and participate in the feeling of the work. It is, in essence, an emotional experience, an expression of the unconscious, our direct response to an inner reality, a higher reality, something we can never fully know, but can only pursue. The artist’s aim is to create a dialog with the viewer… if the viewer will look with a responsive eye.
This exhibition highlights the works of Francesca Azzara, Martin Brouillette, Cynthia Pareja Dubin, Andrea Epstein, Rachel Klinghoffer, Judy Gould, Ben Niles, Jenny Reinhart, Kazaan Viveiros, Becky Yazdan. We invite you to examine these artists’ use of color, line, shape and texture, and the way those elements are arranged on the canvas. The use of color, in particular, impacts powerfully on our senses, enhancing our appreciation and understanding of the artist’s intent. Enjoy the exhibit.
“Art is art. Everything else is everything else.” — Robert Motherwell
